Mooncakes

It's the long awaited mooncake festival.

This year, most hotels in Singapore started selling at the beginning of seventh month.

A little history regarding the seventh month
In the past, most places would prefer not to start selling until the seventh month has ended. In the Chinese calendar, the seventh month is the "Hungry Ghost Festival". The Chinese believed that the ghosts will be set free during this period of the year. Major activities such as moving house, marriage are considered taboo during this period.

Mooncake Festival
The mooncake festival starts right after the seventh month ends. There are many stories as to how the mooncake festival came about - One popular version is linked to the well known Chang E story where she ate the pill and flew to Heaven.

There are two main types of mooncakes that can be found in Singapore - Baked traditional mooncake and the snow skin mooncake. The former is made of lotus seed paste or white lotus paste (the white lotus paste is popular in Singapore). The latter have many varieties, ranging from ice-cream to champagne to chepedek etc.
